‘The Andy Griffith Show’: Watch Colin Male, the Show’s Announcer, Make Only On-Screen Appearance

Thanks to his role as the announcer of “The Andy Griffith Show,” Colin Male’s voice is familiar to many, many people. It is his voice that is one of the first things you hear when you tune into an episode of the classic sitcom.

The show’s opening credits begin with the familiar theme song as Sheriff Andy Taylor (Andy Griffith) and his son, Opie Taylor (Ron Howard) walk down a path with their fishing poles over their shoulders. This combination of music and visuals is seared into the minds of countless television viewers.

Well, as this scene plays out a voice is heard announcing that you are watching “The Andy Griffith Show.”

That voice is Colin Male. He also announces the acting credits for the show. If you’re familiar with the show at all, chances are you can hear the announcer in your head saying, “… starring Andy Griffith. With Ronny Howard. Also starring Don Knotts.”

While his presence is felt in pretty much every episode of “The Andy Griffith Show” thanks to the use of his voice, Colin Male’s face only appeared in one episode of the series. In that episode, he played a game warden who approaches Andy Taylor and Helen Crump (Aneta Corsaut) as they are out fishing.

Announcer Appeared in the Fifth Season of ‘The Andy Griffith Show’

According to IMDb, this episode is titled, “Andy and Helen Have Their Day.” It was the 13th episode of the show’s fifth season. Also, it originally aired on Dec. 14, 1964.

As Andy and Helen walk away from the water, the game warden comes up to them and starts questioning them. He introduces himself as “Peterson” and also says he is the game warden for that area. He then asks Andy for his license. The sheriff searches his pockets, then realizes he must have left his license in his wallet, which was in his Mayberry police uniform.

Male’s character tells Andy he has to have his license with him or he will get fined. Like most of us would do in that situation, Andy decides to point out to Peterson that he’s the sheriff of Mayberry. This, however, does not work with the game ward.

“Well then, you should know the law, shouldn’t you?” Peterson responds. He then asks them to follow him to the Justice of the Peace so they can be fined. Unsurprisingly, Andy is not pleased.

You can watch Colin Male’s only acting appearance on “The Andy Griffith Show” below.
