Luke Already Teased Yoda Returning For The Mandalorian Season 3

One line spoken by Luke Skywalker could have serious implications for Grogu – and hints at the return of Yoda in the next season of The Mandalorian.

One key Luke Skywalker line from The Book of Boba Fett teases the return of Yoda in The Mandalorian season 3. Luke’s appearance in The Book of Boba Fett episode 6 was a high point in a series that often fell flat – even if this did ultimately serve to overshadow its main storyline. Luke’s surprise return saw the Jedi Master training Grogu in the ways of the Force before presenting him with a profound dilemma: forsake all emotional attachment and continue to train as a Jedi, or return to the care of Din Djarin and renounce the Jedi way.

In the end, Grogu’s bond with the Mandalorian was too much, and the foundling returned to Din Djarin just in time to save Mos Espa from a bloodthirsty Rancor – ensuring that The Book of Boba Fett kept its cast intact for a potential second season. Following this decision, viewers might reasonably conclude that Grogu has abandoned the Jedi path for good. However, Luke hints at another way for Grogu to develop his knowledge of the Force, and this could see the return of other beloved Star Wars characters in The Mandalorian season 3.

While overseeing Grogu’s training, Luke tells Ahsoka Tano, “It’s more like he’s remembering than I’m actually teaching him anything.” This presumably means that Grogu has already received substantial instruction in the ways of the Force – and by simply remembering this, he can continue to grow as a Jedi through future seasons of The Mandalorian. With The Book of Boba Fett having already presented a glimpse of Grogu’s training at the Jedi Temple, further flashbacks to his time on Coruscant would provide an easy way for The Mandalorian to develop the foundling’s Force abilities, but without disrupting the Grogu and Din Djarin double act that has become the core of the show. This would also provide the opportunity to incorporate crowd-pleasing cameos from a range of beloved Star Wars characters – including Master Yoda.

With Yoda having spent over 800 years training countless generations of budding Jedi, there is a high likelihood that Grogu was at one point his pupil; indeed, this idea is even strongly hinted at in The Mandalorian season 2, episode 5, “The Jedi,” with Grogu visibly reacting to Yoda being mentioned by name. Flashbacks to Yoda’s lessons would thus represent a natural step in Grogu’s character development while tapping into the Star Wars nostalgia that helped turn The Mandalorian into a global megahit. With Grogu having trained alongside “many Masters” over the years, this would also allow for cameos from iconic characters such as Mace Windu and Qui-Gon Jinn – as well as cult favorites like Aayla Secura and Plo Koon.

With The Mandalorian one of the few unambiguous Star Wars hits since Disney’s takeover of Lucasfilm, the company will hope that season 3 can maintain the show’s popularity. Flashbacks of Grogu’s training at the Jedi Temple would provide an easy way for The Mandalorian’s creative team to delight viewers with a range of surprise cameos – but without compromising the show’s overall narrative thrust. Wherever The Mandalorian season 3 goes, the core relationship between Din Djarin and Grogu will always be its key draw, but appearances from the likes of Yoda could take the buzz surrounding the show into hyperspace.
