Today, we salute “M*A*S*H” actor Edward Winter. He was born on June 3, 1937, in Ventura, California. Most noted for his recurring role as Colonel Samuel Flagg, he appeared throughout the TV series from 1973 to 1979.
Originally cast on “M*A*S*H” as a lieutenant, it later changed to Colonel. Flagg became one of the iconic program’s more memorable supporting characters.
During the classic show’s 11-year-run, Winter acted in seven episodes as Flagg. According to IMDb, the character of Flagg was an intelligence agent (claiming to be C.I.A. several times) who brought a stereotypically paranoid, conspiracy-driven approach to his tasks.
In some episodes, his character was particularly vicious. Prior to being introduced as Flagg, Winter had appeared on the series as Captain Halloran. He also reprised the role of Col. Flagg in an episode of the spin-off series “AfterMASH” in 1984.
The actor was also known for his work in two other films, including “Porky’s II: The Next Day” and “The Greatest American Hero.”
Additionally, Winter made an appearance in the TV show “Alice” as the star’s possible boyfriend Jack. Later in his career, according to IMDb, he was in an episode of “Seinfeld.” This was in addition to animated voiceover work on productions such as: “Duckman,” “Aaahh!!! Real Monsters,” “The Angry Beavers,” and “Fantastic Max.”
He was nominated twice for Tony Awards, which include: “Best Supporting” or “Featured Actor.” Winter was recognized for is acting parts as Herr Ludwig in “Cabaret,” as well as J.D. Sheldrake in “Promises, Promises.”
In 2001, Winter passed away due to complications from Parkinson’s disease in Woodland Hills, California.
Spin-Off TV Show ‘AfterMASH’ Fails to Live Up to Original ‘M*A*S*H’ Series
Despite the original “M*A*S*H” creating such a phenomena, its spin-off TV show “AfterMASH” fell short. After the original series ended on TV, producers attempted to revive their popularity again with the spin-off.
However, “AfterMASH” suffered. Its ratings were incredibly low, and it didn’t last long. Broadcasted on CBS, the show only lasted from September of 1983 to May 1985.
According to your friends here at Outsider, three of the original “M*A*S*H” characters returned on set for the new series “AfterMash.” That includes Colonel Sherman T. Potter, Maxwell Klinger, and Father John Mulcahy.
The TV series only featured three original characters, leaving more questions than answers. Not only did it leave out significant people, “AfterMASH” didn’t reference many important details.
