The Batman International Trailer Offers New Clues About Riddler’s Plan

The murderous Riddler and his plan to "unmask the truth" take center stage in a new international trailer for The Batman.

A rather Riddler-heavy international trailer for Warner Bros. and DC’s The Batman has surfaced online.

The trailer, titled “Truth,” was released by Warner Bros. Indonesia before subsequently being shared to the r/DCEULeaks subreddit. Featuring what might be the most dialogue we’ve heard from Edward Nasthon/the Riddler (Paul Dano) thus far, the trailer sees the enigmatic serial killer address Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) directly, offering clues regarding his motivations and how they pertain to the reclusive Wayne heir.

“I hope you’re listening Bruce Wayne,” Riddler says, seemingly livestreaming what he has to say to all of Gotham City. “I’m just here to unmask the truth.” Selina Kyle/Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz) explains that the Riddler has already killed Gotham’s mayor, Don Mitchell Jr. (Rupert Penry-Jones), as well as its police commissioner, Pete Savage (Alex Ferns), with his new obsession being the Wayne family. The Riddler himself then promises to make Bruce answer for the “sins of [his] father.”

Offering a far more sinister take on the character, Dano is the first person to portray the Riddler in a live-action feature film since Jim Carrey stepped into the role of Edward Nygma for the 1995 Val Kilmer-led film Batman Forever. Dano is also the third person to play the Riddler in a live-action feature film period, the first being Frank Gorshin, who portrayed the character in the 1966 Batman movie, reprising his role from the Adam West-led television show of the same name. (In addition to Gorshin, actors who have played the Riddler on TV include John Astin and Cory Michael Smith.)

Directed and co-written by Matt Reeves, The Batman is slated for release on Friday, March 4. Set during the Dark Knight’s second year of crimefighting, the film follows Batman as he attempts to hunt down the Riddler, a serial killer targeting Gotham’s elite. In addition to Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Kravitz as Selina Kyle and Dano as the Riddler, it stars Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone and Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson. Two spinoff series — one focusing on the Gotham City Police Department and another focusing on the Penguin — are currently in the works for HBO Max.
