β€˜M*A*S*H’: Why the Theme Song Was Supposed to Be β€˜the π•Šπ•₯π•¦π•‘π•šπ••π•–π•€π•₯ Song Ever Written’

One of the most famous elements of the MAS*H franchise is its theme music, β€œπ•Šπ•¦π•šπ•”π•šπ••π•– Is β„™π•’π•šπ•Ÿπ•π•–π•€π•€.” The song was designed to be β€œthe π•Šπ•₯π•¦π•‘π•šπ••π•–π•€π•₯ song ever written.” Here’s a look at why that was the case β€” and why the song for a comedy series is so π••π•’π•£π•œ.

The point of β€˜π•Šπ•¦π•šπ•”π•šπ••π•– Is β„™π•’π•šπ•Ÿπ•π•–π•€π•€β€™ in the film β€˜M*A*S*H’

So why is the theme ofΒ MASHΒ called β€œπ•Šπ•¦π•šπ•”π•šπ••π•– Is β„™π•’π•šπ•Ÿπ•π•–π•€π•€?” It goes back to the original film. One of the secondary characters is a dentist named Capt. Walter Kosciuszko Waldowski who goes by the nickname The β„™π•’π•šπ•Ÿπ•π•–π•€π•€ Pole. The β„™π•’π•šπ•Ÿπ•π•–π•€π•€ Pole is such a π•¨π• π•žπ•’π•Ÿπ•šπ•«π•–π•£ he π••π•–π•”π•šπ••π•–π•€ he must actually be compensating for being π•˜π•’π•ͺ. He decides living as a π•˜π•’π•ͺ man is too π••π•šπ•—π•—π•šπ•”π•¦π•π•₯, so he wants to π•œπ•šπ•π• himself. This sequence is probably the most dated and offensive element ofΒ MASH, as it makes light of π•Šπ•¦π•šπ•”π•šπ••π•– among 𝕃𝔾𝔹𝕋 people.

How a teenager got the chance to write the β€˜M*A*S*H’ theme

While β€œπ•Šπ•¦π•šπ•”π•šπ••π•– Is β„™π•’π•šπ•Ÿπ•π•–π•€π•€ ” has π••π•’π•£π•œ lyrics, its has a pretty melody. Oddly enough, composer Johnny Mandel toldΒ NPRΒ the song was supposed to be 𝕀π•₯π•¦π•‘π•šπ••. Why? Director Robert Altman wanted it that way.

β€œβ€˜It should be the 𝕀π•₯π•¦π•‘π•šπ••π•–π•€π•₯ song ever written,’” Mandel recalls Altman saying. β€œI said, β€˜Well, I can do 𝕀π•₯π•¦π•‘π•šπ••.’ He says, β€˜The song should be called β€˜π•Šπ•¦π•šπ•”π•šπ••π•– Is β„™π•’π•šπ•Ÿπ•π•–π•€π•€ .’”

Altman felt his version of the song was insufficient. Mandel recalled β€œ[Altman] said, β€˜Ah, but all is not 𝕝𝕠𝕀π•₯. I’ve got a 15-year-old kid who’s a π•˜π•šπ•“π•“π•–π•£π•šπ•Ÿπ•˜ π•šπ••π•šπ• π•₯. He’s got a guitar. He’ll run through this thing like a dose of salts.’” Ultimately, Altman’s teenage son, Mike Altman, earned $1 million from writing the song. Meanwhile, his father only made $700,000 for directing the film.

How the world reacted to β€˜π•Šπ•¦π•šπ•”π•šπ••π•– Is β„™π•’π•šπ•Ÿπ•π•–π•€π•€β€™

According toΒ MeTV, β€œπ•Šπ•¦π•šπ•”π•šπ••π•– Is β„™π•’π•šπ•Ÿπ•π•–π•€π•€ ” became a hit, reaching the top of the charts in the United Kingdom. This version of the song was credited to a π•—π•’π•œπ•– band called The Mash, which included a number of singers who worked on television shows likeΒ Wonder WomanΒ andΒ Happy Days.

β€œπ•Šπ•¦π•šπ•”π•šπ••π•– 𝕀𝕀 β„™π•’π•šπ•Ÿπ•π•–π•€π•€β€ is so famous its had a place in pop culture outside ofΒ the MAS*HΒ universe. For example, Marilyn Manson covered it for the filmΒ Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows. β€œπ•Šπ•¦π•šπ•”π•šπ••π•– Is β„™π•’π•šπ•Ÿπ•π•–π•€π•€ ” did pretty well for a song that was designed to be 𝕀π•₯π•¦π•‘π•šπ••.
